Punch-Out!!

Punch-Out!!

One of the biggest names in boxing returns after a 15-year hiatus. Grab a Wii Remote controller in one hand and a Nunchuk controller in the other and step back into the ring with a modern update of the classic Punch-Out!! Little Mac is back! Everyone’s favorite underdog from the 1980s joins the best of the original Punch-Out!! cast in a modern re-imagination of the series. Players will find familiar names like Glass Joe, King Hippo and trainer Doc Louis. These boxers come to life again in cel-shaded 3-D, complete with hilarious fighting animations and back stories that capture all the fun and flair of the original Punch-Out!! games.

The motion-sensitive controls of the Wii console mean that when players throw punches, Little Mac throws punches as well. Additionally, you can control hooks and jabs by combining motion control with control-stick movement. The motion-sensing Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers turn real-life swings into on-screen punches, so anyone can play. The game can also be played with classic NES-style controls by turning the Wii Remote sideways.

Punch-Out!! Review

Punch-Out!! has to be the one Nintendo game that most needed to be redone. I absolutely cannot understand why the big `N’ skipped two whole platforms before releasing a new version. Why wasn’t Punch-Out!! ported to the DS? We know it can handle Super NES games. Oh well, Punch-Out!! is finally back and I love it. Let me start by saying that Nintendo didn’t screw this one up although I can’t say that it felt like 1984 again. The technological leap is pretty dramatic and visually it feels like a whole new experience. On the other hand it takes players back with old school pattern recognition and from a control standpoint it’s a near clone of the NES Punch-Out!!

The characters look fantastic but I was a little disappointed by the opponent’s intro’s that consisted of nothing more than four still images. On the other hand the characters voices are absolutely hilarious. King Hippo has a voice that sounds like a cross between a grunt and a belch. The line-up of fighters is less then what was in the Super NES version but it’s still impressive. I might have liked to have seen Pizza Pasta but no lineup short of every character ever made would have been perfect. The only new character is Disco Kid whose is essentially the new Kid Quick. The lack of new characters shows a little failure of imagination on the part of Next Level Games but such is life. Despite any issues I might have this is a game I really did not want to stop playing and that is about as much as I can demand. The sound of glove on face is positively magical and when Glass Joe went down I wanted him back to his feet so I could continue to deliver more punishment. In fact it is the fighting that Next Level Games really nailed. The first time I fought Don Flamenco he cleaned my clock but I stayed with it until I beat him. I never felt frustrated and the success of planting his Spanish rear on the canvas was outstanding.
