PIONEER AVGVDP1 Vehicle Dynamics Processor Review

There isn’t much you can figure out by looking at this little gray box in the product picture. That illustration doesn’t do this unit justice. The output of this unit requires display on a touch-screen (like many Pioneer LCD screen DVD players or the stand-alone Pioneer AVD-W6210). The things this little box tells you are amazing. G-force numbers for forward and lateral acceleration; Torque and Horsepower; RPM, Speed, GPS coordinates; and so much more. The number of displays that tell you this info is almost limitless.

Most of those are pretty easy to find in a factory service manual, and if you work with installing stereos or work on cars a lot, you will not find this too hard to accomplish. If the thought of reading a wiring chart and cutting into the wires in your car makes you nervous, you probably want to take this to an installer – and I advise you to pick a very good one. This unit ties into some critical car systems and you don’t want a rinky-dink job.

And another thing. The technology in car ignition systems has radically changed over the last few years. Today, many cars have inductive or high-energy systems that do away with the old-school technology of a single coil that provides spark to all the spark plugs. Today there are a number of variations on how the spark is generated. And the bad news is that most of these systems run with such quiet signals that the RPM detection circuitry in this unit cannot be calibrated without extra equipment. That’s right – you need to buy something else to make this work. If you do not get this unit to detect and accurately report RPM, it is for all intents and purposes useless. But I have good news – there is an easy fix for this and I will provide the info below.
